Oat Meal Hot Balls (Oat Swallow)

I like to do some DIY(Do it yourself) little kitchen projects sometimes and I came up with this one some years ago. You know how some people prefer wheat swallow or dumplings for their Nigerian soups? Well, you can now make yours at home and it is very easy. These days you can buy the powder at African stores, but there is no telling what actually is mixed with the wheat powder. When you can make yours, it is easier to say what you added to it or not 🙂

The name “hot balls” came from my ajebutter1. She joined me in making it and she asked “mommy is this going in your blog?” and with a smile I replied “yes baby, it is.” And she said “well you know how we don’t know what to call these dumplings you make? So are these oat meal hot balls?” And zing! I got the name for it.

These hot balls are simply made from Old fashioned oat meal which have been ran through a dry mill blender. Yes! it is that easy! EUREKA!

Here is a recipe for Bulgur swallow  you may want to try

Serves: 3
Ingredients
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • water
Instructions
  1. Run the oats through a dry mill and pulse until it becomes a smooth powder
  2. Heat a pot of water and bring to a boil; then quickly stir in the oat powder until it becomes a smooth paste. Let it cool a bit; then roll into a ball.
Notes
When stirring the oat meal, it will be really soft. It forms when it is cooled a bit
If you do not have a dry mill blender, use a regular blender and add some water to it before blending. Pulse until the mix is smooth, pour into a pot and bring to a slight boil; then stir quickly to form
